It is possible to predict whether pancreatic cysts are benign or premalignant

Yes, it is! Researchers of the University of Michigan and Indiana University, in collaboration with Van Andel Research Institute Investigators ( VARI) found a method which seems to be more accurate than the current ones.

Through a biopsy of the different cysts,researchers found out that the amount of glycans ( carbohydrates) in a cyst can help determining and identifying specific biomarkers of malignancy.

Further study will be needed to validate the clinical value of using glycan variations to differentiate cyst types, but it seems like they are more accurate than current methods," said Dr. Brian Haab, VARI Senior Scientific Investigator.

Let's be hopeful that this procedure works and becomes efficient for the early assessment of malignant cysts; in order to limit any possible risk of cancerous spread and avoid recurrence of the cyst.
